‘Swap Fags for Swag’ this No Smoking Day (fr)
March 13 is No Smoking Day and around 750,000 people are expected to try and quit – will you be one of them?
No Smoking Day is organised by the British Heart Foundation. The charity is so passionate about the benefits of stopping smoking they dedicate a whole day to it, and the campaign’s now in its 30th year.
It really does help inspire people to quit smoking. Each year, more than 750,000 people across the UK attempt to quit after being inspired by No Smoking Day, and a further 1.5 million seek out information about ways to quit smoking in the future. So if you’ve been trying to cut down on cigarettes, or want to finally stop smoking for good, there’s never been a better time to go for it!
It’s believed that around 10 million adults in the UK are smokers – and about two thirds say they want to quit.
For many, worries over the health risks of smoking will be a big reason for wanting to kick the habit. But there are other motivations, too.
In a recent survey of smokers, nearly a third (29%) admitted that their children or family hates them smoking, and a quarter said they enjoy smoking less now than they used to because they feel so guilty about it.
Money is another key factor. In fact, a quarter (25%) of those surveyed said money was actually a bigger reason for wanting to quit than long-term health.
With the average 20-a-day smoker potentially saving £49 a month – or £2,555 a year – if they quit, it’s easy to see why cash is a big motivator for kicking the habit.
And that’s the reason for this year’s No Smoking Day campaign theme, which is ‘Swap Fags for Swag’, encouraging people to give up cigarettes by focusing on all the money they’ll save - and all the fun things they can spend it on instead like family cinema trips, shopping sprees and even holidays.
